The History of media reporting of ‘regime change’ operations

The BBC has a long history of supporting  or ignoring regime change by the UK/US ‘The West’ in various countries.

Most famously perhaps, the BBC was an active particpant in the CIA/MI5 coup in Iraq which overthrew the democratically elected government of Mossadegh in the 1950s.

More recently the BBC’s coverage of regime change operations seems to be characterised by:

  • a lack of critical perspective
  • joining in demonisation programmes
  • assisting in whipping up hysteria

The exent to which this is the result of self-censorship or direct government pressure is unclear (or perhaps a mix of both)

There are regular meetings between the UK government and the press and broadcast media
